A) Before The Fall Of Man
From the opening chapters of Genesis, Scripture presents a clear and unfolding pattern of what God allowed mankind to eat. In the beginning, both humans and animals were given vegetation for food, establishing an original diet rooted in the goodness of creation. But once sin entered the world, the narrative shifts: God Himself killed the first animal to clothe Adam and Eve, demonstrating that it is not wrong or sinful to kill animals and establishing the foundational theme that "without shedding of blood is no remission"
1) Man And Animals Only Ate Vegetation
Genesis 1:27 (KJV) So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
Genesis 1:28 (KJV) And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
Genesis 1:29 (KJV) ¶ And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.
Genesis 1:30 (KJV) And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.
Genesis 1:31 (KJV) ¶ And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.
2) The Tree Of The Knowledge Of Good And Evil
When man was perfect, there was a plant he was not allowed to eat. Not all plants are good for you. Some of them are poisonous and will kill you. God told Adam that if ate the fruit of one certain tree that death was certain (not instantaneous).
Genesis 2:16 (KJV) ¶ And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:
Genesis 2:17 (KJV) But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
B)After The Fall But Before The Flood
It is not wrong or sinful to kill animals.
1) God Killed The First Animal And Made The First Fur Coat
After Adam and Eve sinned, they tried to cover their sin with their works. They made themselves aprons out of fig leaves.
Genesis 3:6 (KJV) ¶ And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
Genesis 3:7 (KJV) And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.
God did not accept their attempt to cover their sins. The first living animal that died was killed by God to make appropriate clothes for Adam and Eve. It was a picture that their works were not sufficient to cover their sins.
Genesis 3:21 (KJV) ¶ Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.
"without shedding of blood is no remission" is the entire theme of the Bible. An innocent being died to cover the sins of the guilty.
Hebrews 9:22 (KJV) And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.
Jesus (innocent) died for us (guilty sinners) that we might have life.
1 Corinthians 15:1 (KJV) ¶ Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;
1 Corinthians 15:2 (KJV) By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.
1 Corinthians 15:3 (KJV) For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
1 Corinthians 15:4 (KJV) And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
2) God Accepted An Animal, Not Vegetables, For An Offering
Cain brought his good works to God for an offering. God rejected Cain's religious works. It is a picture that your "good works" are not a sufficient offering as a payment for your sins.
Genesis 4:1 (KJV) ¶ And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD.
Genesis 4:2 (KJV) And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.
Genesis 4:3 (KJV) ¶ And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD.
Genesis 4:4 (KJV) And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering:
Genesis 4:5 (KJV) But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.
Genesis 4:6 (KJV) ¶ And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?
Genesis 4:7 (KJV) If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.
Genesis 4:8 (KJV) ¶ And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.
Abel brought a blood sacrifice, a picture that the Lamb of God must die to pay the sin debt for man. The sacrifice that Able brought was not a sufficient offering to pay for his sins but it pointed to the Saviour that was the real offering.
Hebrews 9:13 (KJV) For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh:
Hebrews 9:14 (KJV) How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
The Bible repeatedly lets us know that our works are not a criteria for entrance into heaven.
Ephesians 2:8 (KJV) For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Ephesians 2:9 (KJV) Not of works, lest any man should boast.
Ephesians 2:10 (KJV) For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
Titus 3:4 (KJV) But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared,
Titus 3:5 (KJV) Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
Titus 3:6 (KJV) Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;
Titus 3:7 (KJV) That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
Titus 3:8 (KJV) This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men.
It is beliving on the Messiah, Jesus Christ, and trusting that his offering is sufficient, that we gain entrance into heaven.
Hebrews 10:10 (KJV) By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
Hebrews 10:11 (KJV) And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins:
Hebrews 10:12 (KJV) But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;
3) The Difference Between Man And Animals
The biblical narrative makes a clear distinction between mankind and animals—one that is foundational for understanding every later command God gives. Scripture teaches that man alone was created in the image of God, endowed with moral responsibility, spiritual accountability, and eternal destiny . Animals, by contrast, were not made in God’s image, were never given a moral code, and were never promised eternal life . God commanded man to obey, to worship, and to live by His revealed law, but no such commands were ever given to animals .
This distinction becomes even more pronounced when Scripture describes what happens at death. The Bible teaches that the spirit of man returns back to God who gave it, entering either eternal life or eternal judgment, while the spirit of the beast goes downward to the earth, returning to dust and ceasing to exist. The spiritual part of man is eternal; the spiritual part of animals is not. This single truth explains why Christ died for mankind and not for animals, why man faces judgment and animals do not, and why the commands of God apply to human beings alone.
In short, man is an eternal, morally accountable being made in God’s image; animals are temporal creatures without moral law or eternal destiny. This difference underlies every biblical teaching about food, sacrifice, death, and the value of human life.
God Made Man In His Image, But God Did Not Create The Animals In His Image
Genesis 1:26 (KJV) ¶ And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
Genesis 1:27 (KJV) So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
God Told Man To Have Dominion Over The Animals
Genesis 1:28 (KJV) And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
God Told Man, Not The Animals, To Not Eat Of The Tree Of The Knowledge Of Good And Evil
God gave man a moral code by which to live, not animals. Also, refer to the 10 commandments and all the commands throughout the Bible. They were given to mankind, not animals.
It Is Because Of Man's Sin, Not The Animal's, That The World Was Corrupted
It is because of the sin of Adam that mankind has a sinful depraved nature. In the Bible we see that God gives to man eternal life (heaven) and eternal death (hell) but neither of those options were given to animals. Jesus came to earth and died on the cross to save mankind, not animals.
Romans 5:12 (KJV) Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:
Romans 5:13 (KJV) (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law.
Romans 5:14 (KJV) Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come.
Romans 5:15 (KJV) But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.
Romans 5:16 (KJV) And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification.
Jesus Died On The Cross For Mankind, Not Animals
Romans 5:18 very specifically refers to judgment and justification was for MEN.
Romans 5:17 (KJV) For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)
Romans 5:18 (KJV) Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.
Romans 5:19 (KJV) For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.
Romans 5:20 (KJV) Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound:
Romans 5:21 (KJV) That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.
God Commanded Man To Kill And Eat Animals
Exodus 12:5 (KJV) Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats:
Exodus 12:6 (KJV) And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening.
Acts 10:12 (KJV) Wherein were all manner of fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air.
Acts 10:13 (KJV) And there came a voice to him, Rise, Peter; kill, and eat.
Acts 10:14 (KJV) But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean.
Acts 10:15 (KJV) And the voice spake unto him again the second time, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.
Acts 10:16 (KJV) This was done thrice: and the vessel was received up again into heaven.
But God Commanded Animals To Be Put To Death If They Killed A Man Or Woman
Exodus 21:28 (KJV) If an ox gore a man or a woman, that they die: then the ox shall be surely stoned, and his flesh shall not be eaten; but the owner of the ox shall be quit.
Exodus 21:29 (KJV) But if the ox were wont to push with his horn in time past, and it hath been testified to his owner, and he hath not kept him in, but that he hath killed a man or a woman; the ox shall be stoned, and his owner also shall be put to death.
God Commanded Man To Not Murder Other Men
Genesis 9:5 (KJV) And surely your blood of your lives will I require; at the hand of every beast will I require it, and at the hand of man; at the hand of every man's brother will I require the life of man.
Genesis 9:6 (KJV) Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man.
Numbers 35:16 (KJV) And if he smite him with an instrument of iron, so that he die, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death.
Numbers 35:17 (KJV) And if he smite him with throwing a stone, wherewith he may die, and he die, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death.
Numbers 35:18 (KJV) Or if he smite him with an hand weapon of wood, wherewith he may die, and he die, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death.
God Promised Man Eternal Life, Not Animals
"God hath given to us (mankind) eternal life."
1 John 5:10 (KJV) ¶ He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.
1 John 5:11 (KJV) And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
1 John 5:12 (KJV) He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.
The Bible Says That The Spirit Of Man Returns To God Who Gave It
Ecclesiastes 12:7 (KJV) Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.
The Bible Says That The Spirit Of Animals Returns To The Earth, Not Heaven, Hell, Or God
Ecclesiastes 3:20 (KJV) All go unto one place; all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again.
Ecclesiastes 3:21 (KJV) Who knoweth the spirit of man that goeth upward, and the spirit of the beast that goeth downward to the earth?
The spiritual part of man is eternal. The spiritual part of animals is not. Animals cease to exist after they die. Men exist eternally in heaven or hell after they die.
C) After The Flood But Before Moses
After the flood, God expanded mankind’s diet dramatically. He told Noah and his sons that "every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you" (Genesis 9:3), placing no restrictions on clean or unclean animals during this period. This means that Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all of Jacob’s descendants were permitted to eat pork and other animals later classified as unclean, right up until the time God gave the ordinances (specifically of clean and unclean animals) to Moses. However, it was not permitted to eat the blood of any animal.
1) Every Moving Thing Is Meat For Us
Genesis 9:1 (KJV) ¶ And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth.
Genesis 9:2 (KJV) And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth, and upon every fowl of the air, upon all that moveth upon the earth, and upon all the fishes of the sea; into your hand are they delivered.
Genesis 9:3 (KJV) Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you; even as the green herb have I given you all things.
2) Don’t Eat Blood
Genesis 9:4 (KJV) But flesh with the life thereof, which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eat.
3) Beef And Dairy Is OK
The patriarchal narratives reinforce this freedom. When Jehovah appeared to Abraham, Abraham prepared a meal of bread, cakes, a calf, butter, and milk — and the LORD ate it . This scene not only affirms the legitimacy of killing and eating animals, but also clarifies that the later prohibition against boiling a young goat in its mother’s milk was never a universal ban on mixing meat and dairy.
Genesis 18:1 (KJV) ¶ And the LORD appeared unto him in the plains of Mamre: and he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day;
Genesis 18:2 (KJV) And he lift up his eyes and looked, and, lo, three men stood by him: and when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself toward the ground,
Genesis 18:3 (KJV) And said, My Lord, if now I have found favour in thy sight, pass not away, I pray thee, from thy servant:
Genesis 18:4 (KJV) Let a little water, I pray you, be fetched, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree:
Genesis 18:5 (KJV) And I will fetch a morsel of bread, and comfort ye your hearts; after that ye shall pass on: for therefore are ye come to your servant. And they said, So do, as thou hast said.
Genesis 18:6 (KJV) And Abraham hastened into the tent unto Sarah, and said, Make ready quickly three measures of fine meal, knead it, and make cakes upon the hearth.
Genesis 18:7 (KJV) And Abraham ran unto the herd, and fetcht a calf tender and good, and gave it unto a young man; and he hasted to dress it.
Genesis 18:8 (KJV) And he took butter, and milk, and the calf which he had dressed, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree, and they did eat.
D) After The Ordinances Were Given To Moses
Only with Moses do we see the introduction of symbolic dietary ordinances — including the laws of clean and unclean animals — which served as pictures of Israel’s holiness, not universal moral commands. A command is a moral obligation. An ordinance is a symbolic picture..
Luke 1:6 (KJV) And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.
The ordinances ended when Jesus died on the cross. The moral law (commandments) is eternal.
Yet even within the Mosaic system, Scripture maintains several enduring moral prohibitions: not eating fat, not eating blood, not eating animals that died of themselves, and not boiling a kid in its mother’s milk. These commands carry moral weight and remain distinct from the temporary ceremonial ordinances later fulfilled in Christ.
1) Blood And Fat Are Forbidden To Be Eaten
Don’t Eat Fat Or Blood
Leviticus 3:17 (KJV) It shall be a perpetual statute for your generations throughout all your dwellings, that ye eat neither fat nor blood.
Don’t Eat Fat
Leviticus 7:22 (KJV) And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
Leviticus 7:23 (KJV) Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, Ye shall eat no manner of fat, of ox, or of sheep, or of goat.
Leviticus 7:24 (KJV) And the fat of the beast that dieth of itself, and the fat of that which is torn with beasts, may be used in any other use: but ye shall in no wise eat of it.
Leviticus 7:25 (KJV) For whosoever eateth the fat of the beast, of which men offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD, even the soul that eateth it shall be cut off from his people.
Don’t Eat Blood
Leviticus 7:26 (KJV) Moreover ye shall eat no manner of blood, whether it be of fowl or of beast, in any of your dwellings.
Leviticus 7:27 (KJV) Whatsoever soul it be that eateth any manner of blood, even that soul shall be cut off from his people.
Don’t Eat Blood
Leviticus 17:10 (KJV) ¶ And whatsoever man there be of the house of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn among you, that eateth any manner of blood; I will even set my face against that soul that eateth blood, and will cut him off from among his people.
Leviticus 17:11 (KJV) For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.
Leviticus 17:12 (KJV) Therefore I said unto the children of Israel, No soul of you shall eat blood, neither shall any stranger that sojourneth among you eat blood.
Leviticus 17:13 (KJV) And whatsoever man there be of the children of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn among you, which hunteth and catcheth any beast or fowl that may be eaten; he shall even pour out the blood thereof, and cover it with dust.
Leviticus 17:14 (KJV) For it is the life of all flesh; the blood of it is for the life thereof: therefore I said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall eat the blood of no manner of flesh: for the life of all flesh is the blood thereof: whosoever eateth it shall be cut off.
Ye Shall Not Eat Any Thing With The Blood
Leviticus 19:26 (KJV) Ye shall not eat any thing with the blood: neither shall ye use enchantment, nor observe times.
Ye Shall Not Eat The Blood
Deuteronomy 12:15 (KJV) Notwithstanding thou mayest kill and eat flesh in all thy gates, whatsoever thy soul lusteth after, according to the blessing of the LORD thy God which he hath given thee: the unclean and the clean may eat thereof, as of the roebuck, and as of the hart.
Deuteronomy 12:16 (KJV) Only ye shall not eat the blood; ye shall pour it upon the earth as water.
Only Thou Shalt Not Eat The Blood Thereof
Deuteronomy 15:19 (KJV) ¶ All the firstling males that come of thy herd and of thy flock thou shalt sanctify unto the LORD thy God: thou shalt do no work with the firstling of thy bullock, nor shear the firstling of thy sheep.
Deuteronomy 15:20 (KJV) Thou shalt eat it before the LORD thy God year by year in the place which the LORD shall choose, thou and thy household.
Deuteronomy 15:21 (KJV) And if there be any blemish therein, as if it be lame, or blind, or have any ill blemish, thou shalt not sacrifice it unto the LORD thy God.
Deuteronomy 15:22 (KJV) Thou shalt eat it within thy gates: the unclean and the clean person shall eat it alike, as the roebuck, and as the hart.
Deuteronomy 15:23 (KJV) Only thou shalt not eat the blood thereof; thou shalt pour it upon the ground as water.
2) Don’t Eat Animals That Died By Themselves
That Which Died Of Itself
Leviticus 17:15 (KJV) And every soul that eateth that which died of itself, or that which was torn with beasts, whether it be one of your own country, or a stranger, he shall both wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even: then shall he be clean.
Leviticus 17:16 (KJV) But if he wash them not, nor bathe his flesh; then he shall bear his iniquity.
Leviticus 22:8 (KJV) That which dieth of itself, or is torn with beasts, he shall not eat to defile himself therewith: I am the LORD.
Ezekiel 44:31 (KJV) The priests shall not eat of any thing that is dead of itself, or torn, whether it be fowl or beast.
Ye Shall Not Eat Of Any Thing That Dieth Of Itself
Deuteronomy 14:21 (KJV) Ye shall not eat of any thing that dieth of itself: thou shalt give it unto the stranger that is in thy gates, that he may eat it; or thou mayest sell it unto an alien: for thou art an holy people unto the LORD thy God. Thou shalt not seethe a kid in his mother's milk.
3) Don’t Boil A Baby Sheep Or Goat In Its Mother’s Milk
Thou Shalt Not Seethe A Kid In His Mother's Milk
Exodus 23:19 (KJV) The first of the firstfruits of thy land thou shalt bring into the house of the LORD thy God. Thou shalt not seethe a kid in his mother's milk.
Thou Shalt Not Seethe A Kid In His Mother's Milk
Exodus 34:26 (KJV) The first of the firstfruits of thy land thou shalt bring unto the house of the LORD thy God. Thou shalt not seethe a kid in his mother's milk.
Thou Shalt Not Seethe A Kid In His Mother's Milk
Deuteronomy 14:21 (KJV) Ye shall not eat of any thing that dieth of itself: thou shalt give it unto the stranger that is in thy gates, that he may eat it; or thou mayest sell it unto an alien: for thou art an holy people unto the LORD thy God. Thou shalt not seethe a kid in his mother's milk.
4) The Laws Of Clean And Unclean Animals
Not eating pork, etc. are ordinances and are no longer in effect. These laws can be found in:
- Leviticus chapter 11, all.
- Deuteronomy 14:3-21
Those are the ordinances (symbolic pictures) of what the Israelites could eat that were given under the Mosaic covenant. The picture that it conveyed is that Israel was a clean (holy) people.
Exodus 19:1 (KJV) ¶ In the third month, when the children of Israel were gone forth out of the land of Egypt, the same day came they into the wilderness of Sinai.
Exodus 19:2 (KJV) For they were departed from Rephidim, and were come to the desert of Sinai, and had pitched in the wilderness; and there Israel camped before the mount.
Exodus 19:3 (KJV) And Moses went up unto God, and the LORD called unto him out of the mountain, saying, Thus shalt thou say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel;
Exodus 19:4 (KJV) Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on eagles' wings, and brought you unto myself.
Exodus 19:5 (KJV) Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine:
Exodus 19:6 (KJV) And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.
Exodus 19:7 (KJV) And Moses came and called for the elders of the people, and laid before their faces all these words which the LORD commanded him.
Exodus 19:8 (KJV) And all the people answered together, and said, All that the LORD hath spoken we will do. And Moses returned the words of the people unto the LORD.
However, when Jesus died on the cross those ordinances became obsolete. God is not using the nation of Israel as a "kingdom of priests" and an "holy nation" anymore.
The church will never replace Israel as God’s chosen people, but God is no longer using the nation of Israel to spread the gospel. Jesus started a church whose membership relies on being spiritually born again, not on being a descendant of Jacob. God is now using the church to spread the gospel, not the nation of Israel.
5) Vegetarianism Not Possible
During the Passover the Israelites were required to eat meat (the Passover lamb). They could not be a vegetarian and obey God. Vegetarianism is very anti-Christ because a blood sacrifice is required for the remission of sins and vegetarians will not bring that blood sacrifice.
Exodus 12:3 (KJV) Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel, saying, In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to the house of their fathers, a lamb for an house:
Exodus 12:4 (KJV) And if the household be too little for the lamb, let him and his neighbour next unto his house take it according to the number of the souls; every man according to his eating shall make your count for the lamb.
Exodus 12:7 (KJV) And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it.
Exodus 12:8 (KJV) And they shall eat the flesh in that night, roast with fire, and unleavened bread; and with bitter herbs they shall eat it.
Exodus 12:9 (KJV) Eat not of it raw, nor sodden at all with water, but roast with fire; his head with his legs, and with the purtenance thereof.
Exodus 12:10 (KJV) And ye shall let nothing of it remain until the morning; and that which remaineth of it until the morning ye shall burn with fire.
Exodus 12:11 (KJV) And thus shall ye eat it; with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and ye shall eat it in haste: it is the LORD'S passover.
Vegetarianism was not possible. The flesh of the Passover lamb was required to be eaten. Also, the various other sacrifices were required to be eaten as well.
Exodus 29:32 (KJV) And Aaron and his sons shall eat the flesh of the ram, and the bread that is in the basket, by the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.
Leviticus 8:31 (KJV) ¶ And Moses said unto Aaron and to his sons, Boil the flesh at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation: and there eat it with the bread that is in the basket of consecrations, as I commanded, saying, Aaron and his sons shall eat it.
Leviticus 8:32 (KJV) And that which remaineth of the flesh and of the bread shall ye burn with fire.
E) New Testament
The biblical narrative reveals a consistent progression: creation, fall, sacrifice, expanded permission, patriarchal practice, Mosaic symbolism, and New Testament clarity. Understanding this flow is essential for grasping what the Bible actually teaches about food — what God has commanded, what He has permitted, and what He has made obsolete.
1) It Is Ok To Eat Any Kind Of Meat Now
It is now, once again, ok for everyone to eat every kind of animal.
Acts 10:9 (KJV) ¶ On the morrow, as they went on their journey, and drew nigh unto the city, Peter went up upon the housetop to pray about the sixth hour:
Acts 10:10 (KJV) And he became very hungry, and would have eaten: but while they made ready, he fell into a trance,
Acts 10:11 (KJV) And saw heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending unto him, as it had been a great sheet knit at the four corners, and let down to the earth:
Acts 11:1 (KJV) ¶ And the apostles and brethren that were in Judaea heard that the Gentiles had also received the word of God.

Acts 11:6 (KJV) Upon the which when I had fastened mine eyes, I considered, and saw fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air.
Acts 11:7 (KJV) And I heard a voice saying unto me, Arise, Peter; slay and eat.
Acts 11:8 (KJV) But I said, Not so, Lord: for nothing common or unclean hath at any time entered into my mouth.
Acts 11:9 (KJV) But the voice answered me again from heaven, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.
Acts 11:10 (KJV) And this was done three times: and all were drawn up again into heaven.
2) But It Is Still Forbidden To Eat Blood
The apostles basically said that the ordinances (sacrifices and feasts) are obsolete, but that commandments (morality) are eternal and should still be observed. Keeping the ordinances and/or the commandments never saved anyone.
Acts 15:1 (KJV) ¶ And certain men which came down from Judaea taught the brethren, and said, Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses, ye cannot be saved.
Acts 15:2 (KJV) When therefore Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and disputation with them, they determined that Paul and Barnabas, and certain other of them, should go up to Jerusalem unto the apostles and elders about this question.
Acts 15:3 (KJV) And being brought on their way by the church, they passed through Phenice and Samaria, declaring the conversion of the Gentiles: and they caused great joy unto all the brethren.
Acts 15:4 (KJV) And when they were come to Jerusalem, they were received of the church, and of the apostles and elders, and they declared all things that God had done with them.
Acts 15:5 (KJV) But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees which believed, saying, That it was needful to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses.
Acts 15:6 (KJV) ¶ And the apostles and elders came together for to consider of this matter.
Acts 15:7 (KJV) And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up, and said unto them, Men and brethren, ye know how that a good while ago God made choice among us, that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel, and believe.
Acts 15:8 (KJV) And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us;
Acts 15:9 (KJV) And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.
Acts 15:10 (KJV) Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear?
Acts 15:11 (KJV) But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even as they.
Acts 15:12 (KJV) Then all the multitude kept silence, and gave audience to Barnabas and Paul, declaring what miracles and wonders God had wrought among the Gentiles by them.
Acts 15:13 (KJV) And after they had held their peace, James answered, saying, Men and brethren, hearken unto me:
Acts 15:14 (KJV) Simeon hath declared how God at the first did visit the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for his name.
Acts 15:15 (KJV) And to this agree the words of the prophets; as it is written,
Acts 15:16 (KJV) After this I will return, and will build again the tabernacle of David, which is fallen down; and I will build again the ruins thereof, and I will set it up:
Acts 15:17 (KJV) That the residue of men might seek after the Lord, and all the Gentiles, upon whom my name is called, saith the Lord, who doeth all these things.
Acts 15:18 (KJV) Known unto God are all his works from the beginning of the world.
Acts 15:19 (KJV) Wherefore my sentence is, that we trouble not them, which from among the Gentiles are turned to God:
Acts 15:20 (KJV) But that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood.
These four things are moral, not symbolic (ordinances):
- worship of idols,
- fornication,
- animals that die by strangulation,
- eating blood.
3) Raised Observing The Ordinances
The Israelites were raised observing the ordinances that were given to Moses. These ordinances included seven holidays (sabbaths) that were observed throughout the year and a few other things such as the laws of clean and unclean animals. It was difficult for someone who was raised observing those ordinances to now start eating unclean animals. Romans chapter 14 addresses this issue and it says to not pressure people that don’t want to eat unclean animals to eat unclean animals.
Romans 14:1 (KJV) ¶ Him that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful disputations.
Romans 14:2 (KJV) For one believeth that he may eat all things: another, who is weak, eateth herbs.
Romans 14:3 (KJV) Let not him that eateth despise him that eateth not; and let not him which eateth not judge him that eateth: for God hath received him.
Romans 14:4 (KJV) Who art thou that judgest another man's servant? to his own master he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand.
Romans 14:5 (KJV) One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.
Romans 14:6 (KJV) He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks.
Romans 14:7 (KJV) For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself.
Romans 14:8 (KJV) For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and whether we die, we die unto the Lord: whether we live therefore, or die, we are the Lord's.
Romans 14:9 (KJV) For to this end Christ both died, and rose, and revived, that he might be Lord both of the dead and living.
Romans 14:10 (KJV) But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.
Romans 14:11 (KJV) For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.
Romans 14:12 (KJV) So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.
Romans 14:13 (KJV) Let us not therefore judge one another any more: but judge this rather, that no man put a stumblingblock or an occasion to fall in his brother's way.
Romans 14:14 (KJV) I know, and am persuaded by the Lord Jesus, that there is nothing unclean of itself: but to him that esteemeth any thing to be unclean, to him it is unclean.
Romans 14:15 (KJV) But if thy brother be grieved with thy meat, now walkest thou not charitably. Destroy not him with thy meat, for whom Christ died.
Romans 14:16 (KJV) Let not then your good be evil spoken of:
Romans 14:17 (KJV) For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.
Romans 14:18 (KJV) For he that in these things serveth Christ is acceptable to God, and approved of men.
Romans 14:19 (KJV) Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another.
Romans 14:20 (KJV) For meat destroy not the work of God. All things indeed are pure; but it is evil for that man who eateth with offence.
Romans 14:21 (KJV) It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor any thing whereby thy brother stumbleth, or is offended, or is made weak.
Romans 14:22 (KJV) Hast thou faith? have it to thyself before God. Happy is he that condemneth not himself in that thing which he alloweth.
Romans 14:23 (KJV) And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.
4) This Is Offered In Sacrifice Unto Idols, Eat Not
Worshipping idols is a sin. We are not to worship or participate in the worship of idols.
1 Corinthians 10:25 (KJV) Whatsoever is sold in the shambles, that eat, asking no question for conscience sake:
1 Corinthians 10:26 (KJV) For the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof.
1 Corinthians 10:27 (KJV) If any of them that believe not bid you to a feast, and ye be disposed to go; whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience sake.
1 Corinthians 10:28 (KJV) But if any man say unto you, This is offered in sacrifice unto idols, eat not for his sake that shewed it, and for conscience sake: for the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof:
1 Corinthians 10:29 (KJV) Conscience, I say, not thine own, but of the other: for why is my liberty judged of another man's conscience?
1 Corinthians 10:30 (KJV) For if I by grace be a partaker, why am I evil spoken of for that for which I give thanks?
1 Corinthians 10:31 (KJV) Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.
1 Corinthians 10:32 (KJV) Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God:
1 Corinthians 10:33 (KJV) Even as I please all men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.
5) You Should Pray Before You Eat
You can eat any animal that you want as long as you pray over it before you eat it.
1 Timothy 4:1 (KJV) ¶ Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
1 Timothy 4:2 (KJV) Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;
1 Timothy 4:3 (KJV) Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.
1 Timothy 4:4 (KJV) For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving:
1 Timothy 4:5 (KJV) For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.
6) It Is Wrong And Sinful To Do Drugs
Revelation 9:20 (KJV) And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk:
Revelation 9:21 (KJV) Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts.
- φαρμακεία far-mak-i'-ah
- from G5332; medication ("pharmacy"), i.e. (by extension) magic (literally or figuratively):—sorcery, witchcraft.
Conclusion
God Does Not Accept Works For Salvation
The Works Of Adam And Eve
From the beginning of Scripture, God teaches mankind a truth that becomes the foundation of the entire Bible: life for the guilty comes only through the remission of sins which resulted in the death of the innocent. When Adam and Eve sinned, they tried to cover their guilt with their own works—fig leaves of their own making—but God rejected their attempt. Instead, God Himself killed the first innocent animal and clothed them with its skins. That act provided physical protection, but it also pictured a spiritual reality: "without shedding of blood is no remission".
The Works Of Cain
The same truth appears again with Cain and Abel. Cain brought the fruit of his own labor—his works—and God rejected it. Abel brought an animal, a blood sacrifice, and God accepted it. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering: Genesis 4:5 (KJV) But unto Cain and to his offering he had not.... Scripture explains why: Abel’s offering pointed forward to the Lamb of God, whose blood alone can take away sin. Human effort could not save Adam and Eve, and it could not save Cain. Man’s works have never been sufficient to pay for sin.
Christ - The Only Acceptable Sacrifice
God commanded Israel to kill and eat animals for food, and even commanded animals to be put to death when they killed a human being. Killing an innocent animal for food and clothing symbolically pictures Jesus dying to provide us life. Killing an animal because it killed a human is not symbolic, it is justice.
Just as innocent animals died to sustain the physical life of mankind, the innocent Christ died to give spiritual life to mankind. The gospel declares that Christ "died for our sins according to the scriptures… and rose again the third day". His offering, unlike the repeated sacrifices of the Old Testament, was "once for all" and eternally sufficient. Hebrews 10:10 (KJV) By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all ....
The message of Scripture is therefore consistent from Genesis to Revelation:
- Man’s works cannot save him. Only the death of the sinless Christ can provide spiritual life.
- The killing of an innocent animal to provide physical life (by eating the flesh and using the skin as a covering) pictured the death of the sinless Christ. However, it only pictured the sacrifice being made for sin but it actually did not grant forgiveness of sins.
- The real sacrifice was Christ, whose death provides eternal salvation.
The Bible says that eternal life is given only to those who believe on the only begotten Son of God. Just as Adam and Eve could not cover their sin with fig leaves, and Cain could not approach God with the fruit of his own labor, you cannot earn salvation through good works. Salvation is "not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy". Titus 3:4 (KJV)
Jesus Christ—the innocent Lamb of God—offered Himself "without spot to God" to purge your conscience from dead works. He died for your sins, was buried, and rose again so that you might have eternal life.
If you have never trusted Christ alone for salvation, the Bible invites you to do so now. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ—trust His sacrifice, not your works—and God promises you eternal life. "He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life".
